Durango And Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

photo by Ken LundThe Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is one of the main attractions in Durango, Colorado. Just check out our Durango Train Cam for a live look at the town of Durango to catch footage of the magnificent coal-burning steam locomotives in action.

The 45 miles of track between Durango and Silverton was originally built in the late 19th century to carry supplies, people, silver and gold ore from the mines within the San Juan Mountains.

Now a passenger train bringing visitors along the scenic route, guests watch as Colorado’s famous aspen forests, wildlife, and breathtaking scenery pass by. Choose from a number of different seating, such as First Class, Presidential Class, Deluxe Class and Standard Class.

The railway is open year round, following the Animas River in a Colorado area that receives 300 days of sunshine a year. The Animas River is one of the few remaining free-flowing rivers in the western United States, and the canyon itself offers its own authentic view, with farmlands, stagecoach roads, old mining camps dotting the route under the shadows of some of the largest Rocky Mountain peaks in the country.

Tour packages and adventures packages are available, as well as a number of different events like the Polar Express, Romance on the Rails, and seasonal night shoot rides for enthusiastic photographers.

Rides offer a variety of discounts for groups, students, military employees, and hot deals like two-for-one. Passengers are advised to bring sunglasses and layered clothing to prepare for the changing mountain climate.

No mater the season, a trip on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad offers an experience combining natural beauty with historic transport for a unique, cultural experience.
