The history of Durango, Colorado is both long and rich, beginning in 1880 when the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad wound its way through the Rocky Mountains to the San Juan mining district. The town was officially founded in 1880 as Durango, from the Basque word “Urango” meaning “water town.”
